Meta plans ad-free Facebook and Instagram subscriptions in Europe

Packages will cost between €9.99 and €12.99 a month.

Meta Platforms is set to offer European users the option of enjoying an ad-free experience on Facebook and Instagram by subscribing to a new service. This decision comes as a response to mounting legal pressure in Europe concerning how social media companies handle user data.

Starting this month, users residing in the European Union, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland will have the opportunity to subscribe to the social media platforms for a monthly fee of €9.99 when accessed via the web or €12.99 via the mobile app. This subscription service signifies a significant departure from the conventional ad-supported model that has underpinned the revenue structure of these platforms.

In alignment with evolving privacy regulations in the European Union, Meta is taking a unique approach to address the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) requirements. Essentially, the company is allowing all users in the region to opt out of ads and related data tracking by subscribing to this new service. In other words, users can choose to maintain the personalised service with ads for free or opt for the ad-free experience by subscribing. While users are subscribed, their data will not be utilised for advertising purposes, thus ensuring compliance with the changing regulatory landscape.

Meta stated its intention to ensure compliance with European regulations, saying, “To comply with evolving European regulations, we are introducing a new subscription option in the EU, EEA, and Switzerland. In November, we will be offering people who use Facebook or Instagram and reside in these regions the choice to continue using these personalised services for free with ads or subscribe to stop seeing ads.”

This development reflects the shifting landscape of social media in response to stringent regulatory changes. As a result, other social media platforms are also expected to follow suit in offering ad-free subscription options to users in the near future.
